It is a very popular tool with tons of add-ons – templates, modules, plugins, components etc. – that allows you to customize the software to your heart’s content. Once in a while, the need arises to change something and you do not know how to go about it. Joomla! is open source, so there are a lot of support forums on the internet where you can quickly get answers to some vexing problems you may be having. In some cases, it may take a while to get straight answers to a simple question because disagreements between “gurus” as to what the right solution is. Such was the case recently when I wanted to remove the “Welcome to Joomla” title on the front page of a Joomla-based website. Long story short, I had to figure it out myself. The irony of it all is that it is so simple that you wonder why there is so much hyperventilation on the support forums.

To remove the title on the front page of a Joomla! website, do this:

Log in as admin on the backend,

go to “Menus” and choose “Main Menu”.

Look for a menu item called “Home” and click on it to edit.

On the right side, there are a few “Parameters” settings. Look for the one that says “Parameters (System)” and click on it to expand.

Look for the “Show Page Title” option and select the “No” radio button and save.

That will hide the “Welcome to Joomla or Whatever” on the front page.

On the other hand, if you are trying to change the title or greeting from “Welcome to Joomla!” to “Welcome to Our site”, you can do that here too. Instead of hiding the title page, just change the title to reflect the new greeting.

It worked great for me and I hope this helps. It drove me crazy for a while.

I recently had an error in Joomla! and was unable to log in to the administrator site. The error was:

JAuthentication::__construct: Could not load authentication libraries.
Username and password do not match

I almost panicked. It turned out that I had accidentally disabled the authentication module and plugin thereby denying access to the site administrator. Here’s how I fixed the error…

Luckily some good folks at the Joomla Forum offered a suggestion that worked great. So next time you are in the same situation, here’s how to regain access.

Login to your database. If you are on a hosted site, you may have to use phpMyAdmin:

Choose the database in question on the left panel / top.

Now, when looking at the database displayed, on the left panel, choose _plugins or “jos_plugins” depending on whether you used a suffix when you installed Joomla!

Choose the Structure Tab > Edit the “published” Field (7th item down) and change “0″ to “1″

Click “Save”

Go to the Browse Tab > id = 1 > name = Authentication-Joomla > Now, click on Edit pencil and change published = “1″ and click on “Go” (save)

That should do it. To be on the safe side, clear the cache on your browser, then try to login again.
