Symbian’s New Web Tool Kit

The Symbian Foundation has announced the availability of its web application development toolkit for the open-source Symbian^3 mobile platform. The new platform allows programmers and web developers to augment their skills with the use of “just a few more JacaScript APIs” in order to access capabilities like contacts, camera, location etc. on a symbian powered handset.

According to a statement from the foundation, anyone who can create a web page can create an app for Symbian^3, as coders only need standard development tools including HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Watch Out: Copyright Lawsuit E-mail Scam

So I received an email from a very perceptive user the other day. The request was to look into a suspicious e-mail that accused this user of copyright infringement:

“To whom it may concern,
It has come to our attention that you have made an unauthorized use of my copyrighted work in the preparation of a work derived therefrom. We have reserved all rights in the Work, which was first published in 2008, and we have registered the copyright.

I am now convinced that computer software vendors, knowingly or otherwise, help perpetuate insecure computer practices. They do this by the ridiculous practice of pushing out updates through executable files which ninety-eight percent of the time will get blocked by the security software we encourage users to install on their systems. You get a notification that an update is available, and you click on the “update now” button and sit there and wait, and wait, and wait….

How to browse a JavaScript-ridden Website

Have you ever gone to a website to read an article and find yourself playing mouse pilot trying to avoid those pesky text-link ads, pop-ups, scrolling and flashing banners and other annoyances? Some websites are just horribly notorious for this kind of behavior. Some even hold you hostage for half a minute with ad pages the won’t go away unless you “click here to skip this ad”. I admit that the publishers of these websites have every right to generate revenue – that is how they are able to offer us free content, but come on!
